I'm taking this open day to wear a new-to-me Jerry Garcia tie, originally owned by my EKU comrade Gary Kuhnhenn. Its label says the pattern is "Paris in the Rain." My tie tack is a very small purple-and-silver guitar bearing the words "J. Garcia," noting Jerry's career as lead guitarist/vocalist for The Grateful Dead (1965-1995). In the late 1980s he created his second career as a graphic designer, and many of his paintings and drawings became widespread on neckties and other fashion accessories. It's appropriate to honor Jerry Garcia during August, remembering his birthday on 1 August 1942 and his death on 9 August 1995.
