Happy Birthday, Gary Kuhnhenn! Gary is a donuts comrade and geology professor at Eastern Kentucky University. Besides serving in the geology/geography/physics/astronomy department, he has served many roles in other areas of the university, including the Honors Program and Enrollment Management. Gary and I are both now retired but we see each other almost every Friday morning. 

Two years ago Gary gave me several ties from his collection, including this one featuring the art of Edward Gorey, as presented on Masterpiece Mystery! on PBS.

Recently Beth and I were very happy to help Gary and his wife adopt a tiny orange kitten who showed up in our neighborhood in Berea. At first they called him Orange Crush, but he quickly became "CRASH" due to his boisterous exploits in their house in Winchester.

For the birthday of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), I've chosen my tie that features the art of Edward Gorey (1925-2000). Gorey's macabre drawings became famous through the opening and closing credits on Masterpiece Theater (and later Masterpiece Mystery) on PBS. The dark similarities between Poe and Gorey have been recognized in several ways, as in "Drama After Dark" and the blog "Poe x Gorey."

 Today's tie is an unsolved mystery! It originally belonged to my EKU comrade Gary Kuhnhenn. The art is indisputably that of Edward Gorey (1925-2000), who was "an American writer, Tony Award-winning costume designer, and artist, noted for his own illustrated books as well as cover art and illustration for books by other writers. His characteristic pen-and-ink drawings often depict vaguely unsettling narrative scenes in Victorian and Edwardian settings." All watchers of Mystery! on PBS can recall his wonderful animations of cemetery scenes, strange deaths and police sleuthing.
