27 July 25

For her half-birthday Beth asked me to wear this coffee beans tie! She is clearly an everyday addict, but she stops drinking the stuff before suppertime so she will be able to sleep well. We have about 50 mugs on hooks in the kitchen, and another fifteen stored for Christmas. One mug decorated with Boynton bears never gets hung up because it has the very special purpose of being set up every night for the first cup in the morning!

I'm wearing my coffee beans tie for National Coffee Day! I set up Beth's first-of-the-morning coffee every night, and she usually has several more mugs every day. I don't like coffee flavor but I'm happy to enable her habit!

One of the annual celebrations for today is "Wife Appreciation Day." Of course I wish it were styled as Spouse Appreciation Day, but the main point is that I get to celebrate my own appreciation for Beth! She is the one in the family who actually enjoys coffee, especially first thing in the morning, and I get to show my devotion to her by readying the coffee maker every night at bedtime. So we chose my coffee beans tie for today. We first became good friends around this time in 1971 at Houghton College, mutually appreciating "General Physics" with a teacher who happened to wear funny ties to class!

Today we're celebrating Mothers' Day! (Yes, in plural.) This was the first Sunday in May when all of all four local-family mothers could be together. All of them are coffee drinkers, and so Beth chose my coffee-beans tie. It was also our annual Soup Day, honoring the birthday (on 24 May) of soup-lover Robert Wollenweber. Beth's brother Mark is on a driving tour toward the Ozarks and joined us for a special surprise!

It's National Coffee Day! Here's one of our excellent coffee mugs. I prepare Beth's morning pick-me-up every night. My tie shows bags of coffee beans and steaming cups of the stuff. I think the tie's label is puzzling -- below the word Structure is a "number line" of Roman numerals . . . why??

It's National Coffee Day! I don't drink the stuff but I diligently support Beth's obsession, at least two cups per day. The coffee in our house is "Equal Exchange®," and one of the flavors she enjoys is called Mind, Body and Soul. All Equal Exchange coffees are both organic and Fair Trade. We buy it in bulk through Amazon Prime subscribe-and-save. My tie shows bags of coffee beans and steaming cups of "joe."

Happy Birthday (tomorrow), Clyde David Burberry! CDB has been a family friend and adopted brother ever since he was our pastor in 1987! Our sons and their families know him as "Uncle Bubba," and he was an officiant at both of our family's weddings in 2010. He's helped me with several home projects and I hope we can do some more together. At his request, Beth chose my "coffee beans" tie for this occasion, celebrating a drink they enjoy (although I do not).

1 October 17

I'm wearing my coffee beans tie to honor International/National Coffee Day, celebrated annually around this time. Some calendars place it on the last Friday in September, while others push it to 1 October. Beth drinks several cups of the stuff every day; I do not enjoy the flavor, but I do like the aromas.

It's Labor Day! So I didn't go to work or labor today. But I wore a tie anyway, to honor the birthday (on last Saturday) of our family friend and "adopted" brother Clyde David Burberry. One of his passions is coffee, so he got to see my coffee bean-bags tie. I also got to meet 5-month-old ginger kitten Scotty!

National Coffee Day, every year on this date. I still don't drink it, but I like this tie.

Today is National Coffee Day. Some year maybe I will break down and try some myself. I don't mind making it for Beth, and the aroma is often pleasing. But I have very strong memories of the bitter aftertaste . . .

Today is National (or International) Coffee Day! I don't drink the stuff but I enjoy enabling Beth with her daily (usually double-daily) habit.

Saturday was National Coffee Day. I don't drink the stuff myself, but I'm happy to celebrate it on behalf of my wife!

My sister Gloria Rae (Kleppinger) Huizenga was born on this date a whole bunch of years ago. When I asked her to select a tie for me to wear today, she settled on this one featuring coffee beans. In the early 1970s, she and my wife-to-be urged me to drink the stuff myself, but my tastes have long preferred hot chocolate. Writing this blog entry has inspired me to want some right now. Happy Birthday, dear sister!

Happy National Coffee Day! I don't drink the stuff myself, but I do enjoy making it daily for my wife. All of our coffees are Equal Exchange (Fair Trade certified).

11 May 11

The news this morning created the occasion to wear my "coffee beans" tie for the first time! The world price for coffee beans reached a record high in 34 years today. I don't drink the stuff myself, but I regularly indulge my wife's near-addiction. We buy only fair-trade coffees, mainly from Peace Craft in Berea, KY.
