Fifty years ago today, the Bahamas became a nation. Jonathan and Courtney brought this tie featuring Bahama's flag back from a short term mission trip in 2011.

Two days from now (Saturday, 10 July), The Bahamas celebrates 48 years of nationhood. My tie showing a stylized version of the national flag was brought back to me by Jonathan and Courtney 10 years ago after their brief mission trip. "The colours of the flag carry cultural, political, and regional meanings. The gold alludes the shining sun – as well as other key land-based natural resources – while the aquamarine epitomises the water surrounding the country. The black symbolises the 'strength', vigour, and force' of the Bahamian people, while the directed triangle evokes their 'enterprising and determined' nature to cultivate the abundant natural resources on the land and in the sea." On 10 July 1973, The Bahamas became an independent nation. I have to celebrate with my Bahamas flag tie today because I'm not wearing a tie on Friday (and tomorrow is special for a very different reason!). Below the tie I'm wearing what would have to be called Bermuda shorts, which I hope does not create a Caribbean conflict. (I have learned that The Bahamas and Bermuda are actually not in the Caribbean Sea but they are counted among Caribbean travel destinations!)

Today's tie features the flag of The Bahamas. It was brought back to me by Jonathan and Courtney eight years ago. Bahamas' Independence Day is celebrated on 10 July, but I have a different occasion to honor on Wednesday. As demonstrated on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory, the study of flags is called vexillology. I think Sheldon Cooper would be very happy with any tie designed around a flag!

This year on 10 July I missed celebrating Bahamian Independence Day, so I'll wear my Bahamas flag tie today to honor Emancipation Day (yesterday). In 1834, slaves in the British Empire were freed. In
The Bahamas, the day is "celebrated with a Junkanoo Rush-out, a day of beaching, sailing, and regattas." Today I'm enjoying my free birthday-week lunch from Newk's Eatery, and the cup and straw match my shirt and tie!

Today is my annual chance to wear my tie featuring the flag of The Bahamas! The islands became a nation on 10 July 1973. The simple pattern of flag and diagonals on a blue field, matched with a solid yellow shirt, also fits the theme of "Simplicity Day" (today), honoring the 198th birthday of Henry David Thoreau. (Today is also National Pecan Pie Day, and Beth says we will celebrate that quite soon.)

Yesterday marked 40 years of independence for The Bahamas, so I'm wearing their flag today. (Yesterday I was quite busy celebrating Mallie Kleppinger's birth!)

My tie is based on the flag of the Bahamas, and I'm wearing it today to honor Bahamian Emancipation Day. Slavery was abolished in the Bahamas on Aug. 1, 1834. The official holiday is on the first Monday in August but I'm celebrating it early because I have many other occasions tying up the early part of August.

Happy Birthday, Jonathan Albert Kleppinger! Also, Happy Bahamian Emancipation Day! Jonathan and Courtney brought this tie, featuring the flag of The Bahamas, back from a recent Mission Discovery trip. The birthday boy agreed that this was a great way to celebrate today. In The Bahamas, the first Monday in August marks the emancipation of slaves in the British Colonies in 1834. The main party is called the “Junkanoo Rush-Out.”
