Today's "SCREAM" tie celebrates (?) the theft of the amazing painting by Edvard Munch from the museum in Oslo, Norway, on 22 August 2004. I picture the painting itself as screaming during the theft. It was recovered two years later, on 31 August 2006.

Today's tie features the most famous artwork by Edvard Munch, "The Scream." One version was stolen from the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway in 2004, and was recovered on this date in 2006.

Today I'm attending the Kentucky Convergence Conference (a meeting about educational technology, primarily for colleges and universities). My tie featuring Edvard Munch's "The Scream" is my nod to Halloween. As my name tag says, I'm both a Presenter and an Old-Timer, conferencing like this since 1996. My own presentation is titled "Discussion Boards are Old Hat!" and I'm talking about using wikis and virtual tours for classroom teaching.

Picking up on the art-theft theme from yesterday . . . On this date in 2004, Edvard Munch's famous painting "The Scream" was stolen from the Munch Museum, in Oslo, Norway. It was recovered two years later and has been returned to public viewing after some restoration.

Today is INTERNATIONAL PANIC DAY! Do all the panicking you can today, and then you won't have to worry about it for another year. As one Web site explains, "the word panic is derived from the Greek word associated with the Greek shepherd god Pan. According to mythology, Pan amused himself by striking fear among travelers in the woods."

I have several good reasons to wear my tie featuring "The Scream" by Edvard Munch today! It is the opening day for classes at Eastern Kentucky University, which can be frightening for both students and teachers. We are also recovering from a frightful "failed upgrade" for our Blackboard system. But the best reason is that today is the twelfth anniversary of the day when "The Scream" was stolen at gunpoint from its museum in Oslo, Norway. (It was recovered in good condition two years later.) Nate David is just plain happy to be with his "Papa Seeds," no matter what tie I'm wearing.

10 December 13
I made an AWFUL mistake! When I looked at my calendar it said "Edvard Munch's birthday (1863)," and so I pulled out my "SCREAM" tie. But later I discovered that the calendar was set for Thursday, 12 December. So I'm two days early with my celebration of this awesome painting. This year there's something special to scream about -- a Christmas tree at Union Station in Washington, DC, decorated with 700 ornaments bearing this iconic face!
