It's National Day of the Horse! "In 2004, Congress designated December 13^th as National Day of the Horse, and has been celebrated each year since. The day was established to encourage U.S. citizens to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States." One area that deserves greater recognition is the role of horses in therapy for humans. FEI (Fédération Équestre Internationale) is an international organization that promotes equine-assisted therapy.

Happy Horse Day! This is one of those occasions when I call attention to the old French Republican Calendar, which was designed in the 1790s to remove religious or mythical references. It recognized the annual seasonal cycles and broke up the year into twelve months, with three ten-day cycles in each month instead of the traditional 7-day "weeks." To glorify the spirit of agricultural labor, each day was assigned to honor a crop or an animal or a farm tool. Today, which is 5 Vendémiaire on the calendar, celebrates Cheval (the horse). My maroon tie shows a horse and rider!

20 March is always "Sweater Day," honoring the birthday (in 1928) of Fred Rogers. "Mister Rogers" always wore a cardigan, with a tie, almost always on a white shirt. His ties were always muted but sometimes featured a small repeating figure like the horse-and-rider on mine. I hope you are enjoying "a beautiful day in the neighborhood" today.

The day we count as 26 September was honored as Horse Day (Cheval) on the 18th-century French Republican Calendar. To celebrate the joys of agrarian life, days were assigned to plants, animals or farm implements. As expressed by the calendar designers: "As the calendar is something that we use so often, we must take advantage of this frequency of use to put elementary notions of agriculture before the people — to show the richness of nature, to make them love the fields, and to methodically show them the order of the influences of the heavens and of the products of the earth." My tie for "Cheval" (5 Vendémiaire) was a Father's Day present in 2012; it is labeled "Pride of England" and was apparently originally sold through T. H. Campbell Bros., Middlesboro, KY.

My horse-and-rider tie honors the 270th birthday of Francis Asbury, the first bishop in the (American) Methodist Episcopal Church. His long travels in the colonies, states and pioneer territories led to his nickname as the "Bishop on Horseback." He lived from 1745 to 1816.

July 15 is "National I Love Horses Day." I have no strong feelings about horses, but I'm wearing this tie today for my cousins and other friends who do.
