Grandson BM's school is having a "Grandparents' Ice Cream Social" today, along with a book fair to sell Scholastic® books. So I'm wearing my ice cream cone tie!

The date of 16 July is frozen onto our calendars as National Ice Cream Day. Actually every single day is an ice cream day for the Berea Kleppingers, but we will make a special observance this evening. We like all sorts of chocolate flavors, but "Moose Tracks" is extraordinary.

Ice Cream! We all scream for ice cream. Today marks the birthday of Ben Cohen, cofounder of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. It's also the birthday of my EKU Philosophy comrade Matt Pianalto.

580 years ago today, kissing was banned in England, to prevent the spread of the Black Death. On a much happier note, my ice cream cone tie celebrates the birthday (on 14 July, 1906) of Tom Carvel, founder of the Carvel Corporation. As recorded in Wikipedia, "Carvel began selling ice cream out of his truck in 1929 in Hartsdale, New York. On Memorial Day weekend in 1934, his truck had a flat tire, so he pulled into a parking lot next to a pottery store and began selling his melting ice cream to vacationers who were driving by. The owner of the store allowed Carvel to use electricity from his store, so he opened his parked truck for ice cream sales. Within two days he had sold his entire supply of ice cream and concluded that he could increase his profits by working from a fixed location. In 1936, Carvel purchased the pottery store and converted it into a roadside ice cream stand; this permanently established Carvel as the first retailer to develop and market soft ice cream."

It's National Ice Cream Day! I have learned that July is Ice Cream Month, so it's appropriate for this special observance at the middle of the month! So far we've had our ice cream almost every day this year . . . regardless of the month . . .

Happy Ice Cream Day! My tie features scoops of ten different flavors. Of special note today -- Kroger stores are selling their "Deluxe" ice creams for 99 cents!

The third Sunday in July is always National Ice Cream Day! You'll have to ask President Reagan why he chose that day in 1984 to promote the dairy industry. I think this tie is very tasteful.

Happy Birthday, Reecie Ratliff! Reecie is a friend from Nicholasville, KY; we met at Nicholasville Presbyterian Church around 2008. As soon as she saw this tie in my blog in August she knew what she wanted for her birthday!

On August 5 I usually wear a tie featuring the Statue of Liberty, to celebrate the cornerstone-laying in 1884. But today I couldn't resist choosing this new birthday gift (from Beth), where the cone holds 20+ scoops of ice cream! (National Ice Cream Day is the third Sunday in July, so I'm all set for July 17 next year. Plus other party occasions!)
