Being retired is not an excuse from celebrating Pi Day on 3/14! I am working outdoors at home today, but I circumvented my gardening clothes to wear this π tie for 3 minutes and 8.4 seconds, which is 3.14 minutes.

12-14 March 23

Today is "approximately" Pi Day. It's my best tie-wearing day to celebrate Pi Day (3-14) because EKU has Spring Break this week. The number π is a universal constant that we associate most commonly with the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. For many calculations it is sufficient to use the value 3.14159, but you can find the first 10,000 decimal digits here. Although π is a never-ending decimal, its digits display some interesting patterns.

13-14 March 22

 Pi Day is almost here! On 3-14 people all around the globe have thoughts circling around the wonderful constant π, most familiar as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. But Spring Break at EKU brings a break to my own cycle of daily ties, so I'm centering my own π celebration one day early with my tie covered with it. The π-symbols are in straight rows and colunns, but each block of four shows them in rotation, so it still has a circular theme, I think!

Happy ∏ Day! You can see the first million digits of π at the piday site. And if you see this before 3:14 p.m. (CDT) today, you can join a Facebook event where Siva Natarajan will recite 10,000 digits of Pi live. Personally, I prefer staring at the π symbols on my tie.

14-15 March 20

Yesterday, 3-14 or 3.14 (Saturday), was Pi Day! So today I'm filling in with my π tie. In case you need a reminder, π is the irrational number that is best known as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. But it shows up all over statistics, physics, astronomy, music, acoustics -- it's one of the fundamental constants for virtually every repeating pattern we can observe, and so it is also very philosophical. The bonus photo documents the toilet paper aisle at Walmart yesterday, during the Great Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020.

It's Pi Approximation Day! The fraction 22/7 is a very useful approximation for π, being "off" by only 0.04% -- which is actually a little more accurate than the decimal value 3.14. So please find some irrational way to honor 22 July, by eating some pie, running in circles, or finding a position diametrically opposed to yours.

14 March 18

The date 3-14 is always Pi Day! Even though I'm not going to work today (on Spring Break) I must circle up and wear this new tie, tumbling the Greek letter π around and around. I've tied it with the Van Wijk knot, where you wrap the tie three times and then push the main part through, making approximately 3.14 spirals. I couldn't resist including a pie plate for my photo.
