6 June 25

The first Friday in June is always National Donut Day. You and Krispy Kreme® may prefer the spelling "doughnut" but Dunkin'® and many other makers use the shorter word. It is based on the donut event created by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor those of their members who served donuts to soldiers ("doughboys") during World War I. Today I am enjoying donut holes!

I missed wearing my special tie on National Doughnut Day (7 Jume), so I'm circling around to it today.

In our house right now all we have are doughnut holes! But they will do well to honor the celebration.

According to some calendars, this is the date in 1847 when an American sailor named Hanson Gregory "invented" the doughnut. (Well, someone had to do it, sometime!) The legend says that Gregory was dissatisfied with the greasiness of the pastries on his ship, particularly the raw centers, and punched a hole with either the ship's tin pepper box or with one of the spokes on the ship's navigation wheel. After he taught his mother about making the rings, she added nut fillings to the centers -- which might be the origin of the "nuts" in the name of the pastry!

This afternoon our campus has a celebration for the life of Bruce MacLaren (1943-2021). I knew Bruce primarily through our work with the EKU Honors Program, but we had a lot of fun with our group "doughnuts" meetings every Friday from 2000-2018, mostly in his office in the Memorial Science Building. So my doughnut today gives fond memories of those times! One day around 2008 Bruce was super-excited to share with us a video depicting a monk's first experience with a book, and we all laughed together.

My tie shows various doughnuts, and when I wear it on a beige shirt, it looks like there's an actual hole in the tie!

In case you need a good reason to celebrate, today is Buy A Doughnut Day. I used it as an excuse to (1) buy some doughnuts and (2) wear my doughnuts tie.

National Donut Day obviously creates an exception to my "no-tie-on-Fridays" general rule. National Donut Day started in 1938, sponsored by the Salvation Army as a fundraiser. It honored the "donut lassies" who provided amenities (writing supplies, cooked meals, donuts) to the American soldiers in France during World War I. Today many stores offer free donuts/doughnuts!

Today I'm attending the Kentucky Innovations Conference . . . about teaching and learning in higher education . . . I decided I should always have some doughnuts with me!

Today is simply a good day to think about doughnuts.

It's National Doughnut Day! This great tie gives me a great excuse to be more formal on this Friday. Later today I'm excused from work to help with the Kentucky Special Olympics, carrying luggage for the participants and their families as they move in to their rooms at Eastern Kentucky University.

I am celebrating National Relaxation Day with a new tie that reminds everyone to relax with a doughnut today. It's also OK to relax with some chocolate cheesecake too, if that's what you happen to have in your office refrigerator. But you MUST enjoy some kind of relaxing moment(s)--foodwise or otherwise--on National Relaxation Day!
