27 January 26

I claim (with no other evidence at all) that I am the best-dressed resident of Berea, KY, to be clearing his driveway entrance of 4 to 6 inches of snow and ice. My tie was chosen by Beth to celebrate her six-dozenth birthday today, because she loves (Diet) Coke and polar bears. I have given her some flowers, Twix frozen treats, and mini donuts, and I will be cooking up an instant chocolate muffin which will be festooned with a candle.

27 February 23

Today (27 February) is International Polar Bear Day. The organizers say "We founded the day to coincide with the time period when polar bear moms and cubs are snug in their dens. As part of our celebration, we focus on the need to protect denning families across the Arctic." My tie shows the Coca-Cola® logo with the polar bear theme from their print and TV advertisements. They used polar bears infrequently in print ads from 1922 through 1992, and then came the major shift in television ads in 1993's "Always Coca-Cola®" campaign.

Happy International Polar Bear Day! Of course polar bears themselves are international. Today we are being inspired to support actions and policies that will protect these great creatures from the current environmental threats to their survival. We have a few house polar bears -- this is the second-largest one! My tie shows polar bears and the Coca-Cola® logo. Advertisements for Coca-Cola have featured polar bears since 1922 but they became especially prominent in the "Always Coca-Cola" campaign beginning in 1993. The idea originated with thoughts about what always-thirsty polar bears would drink at a movie theater.

Today is International Polar Bear Day! I don't know why they chose this date. But my polar bear tie says Coca-Cola® because they've used polar bears in many commercials.

For the last ten or eleven years, David Anderson has been one of our sons! Our connections started at Richmond First United Methodist Church and Eastern Kentucky University. We have followed his progress in political science and student services through Ohio University, University of Vermont, Florida State University, and now the University of Colorado. Today is his 30th birthday, and we are sending him love from Berea to Denver. He chose this tie for me to wear today because he would love to share a Coke with me.

Today is Take-Your-Teddy-Bear-To-Work Day! My own polar bear stays in my office (which I keep arctic cold all the time). His name is "Cokie" because he carries his own bottle of Coca-Cola® everywhere he goes. The polar bears on my tie enjoy rolling around the Coca-Cola logo.

Last tie-wearing day for National Zookeepers Week -- so I'm wearing my polar bears. The statue in the background is of Daniel Boone, on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University.

Yesterday was the 82nd birthday of our family friend Charles Wesley Bertrand. We first met when Charles was the associate pastor of Centenary United Methodist Church in Lexington, KY, about 31 years ago. We kept track of him and his family as he was moved to several different churches around Kentucky, but he now lives just a few houses away from us! We know that he loves Coca-Cola, so I wore this tie today!

This is Beth's 56th birthday and she chose my Coca-Cola® tie because it combines three of her favorite things: (Diet) Coke, polar bears and snow. I think she also thinks of me as one of her favorite things. For a better image of the tie, follow the link on the index.
