My "sculpted" tie features a New York City taxi. I doubt that Beth will ever drive one, but today we're celebrating her delayed visit to the driver's license office to renew her license!

Taxicabs first ran the streets of New York City on 13 August 1907. "Harry N. Allen didn’t like the fares that horse drawn carriages charged, so he decided to start his own taxi service. Allen’s New York Taxicab Company started service in 1907 after Allen imported 65 red and green autos from France. He decided to paint his cars yellow so that they were more noticeable from a distance." We bought this sculptured tie on Times Square more than twenty years ago.

On this date in 1899, New York City taxicab driver Jacob German was arrested for driving at 12 miles per hour, exceeding the official speed limit of 8 miles per hour. He became the first person arrested for driving an automobile too fast. My tie is sculpted to match a NYC taxicab, and was bought on Times Square along with "Milton," our taxicab-driver bear.

On this date in 1899, a New York City taxicab driver named Jacob German became the first person arrested for speeding. He was caught going 12 miles per hour on Lexington Street in Manhattan. Jacob German's taxi looked nothing like the model sculpted on my tie.

I knew of no special occasion for 26 June, so I chose my sculpted New York City taxicab tie which I had not worn for a long time. But I've learned this noteworthy fact in automotive history: it was on this date in 1956 that the U.S. Congress approved the Federal Highway Act, allocating more than $30 billion for the construction of some 41,000 miles of interstate highways. Today's tie celebrates 109 years of taxicabs in New York City (beginning yesterday, in 1907). And my tie was tied by Beth to celebrate International Left Hander's Day (also yesterday)! We bought this tie on Times Square (NYC), maybe fifteen years ago.

Beth said "choose a random tie," and so I did. It turns out that my random choice is also quite appropriate for the beginning of National Transportation Week, which became an official annual celebration--the week in May that includes the third Friday--with President Kennedy's proclamation in 1962.

Today is International Left Handers Day. I'm married to one but I don't have any tie representing the sinister side of life. So instead we'll do the right thing and celebrate the date of the opening of the first taxi service in New York City, in 1907. We bought the tie during an Honors Program trip to NYC several years ago. The taxi driver bear was named after Milton Hershey because of his provenance from the Hershey candy store at Times Square.
