For Earth Day 2026 I've chosen one of my most "earthy" ties, featuring moose in their environs. Moose are not native to Kentucky; the nearest stable wild moose populations are far to the north, often in the New England or northern Great Lakes regions.

 For no special occasion today (except the birthday of my great-great-grandmother Sarah Lesher Dreibelbis (1806-1872) and also the birthday of my co-grandfather David Tennill (for Jonathan-and-Courtney's children)) I'm wearing this rather strange moose tie -- and my pink elephant tie bar!

 I'm wearing my moose tie for its rich "environmental" theme. (It's a bid saddening that there is no official Moose Appreciation Day.) Today in Beginning Ethics we are starting our study of environmental ethics, talking principally about the difference between anthropocentric and ecocentric viewpoints. Later on we'll get to global warming, plastic pollution and recycling!

It's quite rare to find an occasion to wear this moose tie, but I'll take this chance to honor tomorrow's birthday of Mary Lou Stephens! She's a good friend from church, and she gave me this tie from the collection of her husband, Allan Durand Stephens. Today at Richmond First United Methodist Church I'm playing with the handbell choir, especially as a tribute to Barb and Tim Singleton. Barb has been the handbell director at FUMC for almost 30 years, and I played in that group with Tim and others from 1995 to 2008. They are moving to Florida soon, and the church wanted to celebrate this history with a handbell benediction and then a party/reception. My amazing tie featuring moose (meese?) originally belonged to Allan Durand Stephens (1940-2010), who played alongside me and Tim on the bass bells!
