27 March 23

I'm wearing my birch trees tie today to honor Birch Tree Day (Bouleau, 7 Germinal) on the French Republican Calendar. It was created after the French Revolution, expressing deep connections to nature by correlating each day on the calendar with a plant (a crop, flower or tree), a farm animal or an agricultural tool. Yesterday marked the birthday of Robert Frost (1874-1963). My birch trees tie is related to his wonderful poem Birches. We have large river birch trees which we planted 26 years ago.

22 March 23

Yesterday (21 March) was the International Day of Forests, proclaimed by the United Nations. Our house in Berea, KY is about 8 miles west of the border of the Daniel Boone National Forest (London District), and we can see the forests on Bear and Indian Fort Mountains from our front door. We maintain our own mini-forest here at "Eleven Gables on Occasional Pond." My tie's pattern is based on the bark of the birch tree, and is also appropriate for celebrating Birch Tree Day (27 March) on the French Republican Calendar.

26 March 20

Today I'm marking the birthday of Robert Frost (1874-1963). My birch trees tie is related to his wonderful poem Birches. Also, tomorrow is Birch Tree Day on the French Republican Calendar! You might also want to celebrate the birthdays of Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) and Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015).

Happy Birthday, Johann Sebastian Bach! (1685-1750) This is the "Old System" date, from before the 11-day "skip" when the Gregorian calendar was adopted, so you will also see his birthday as March 31. Google has a special tool today to let you add Baroque-style harmony to your own short tune. You can hear my own sample here. But I'm taking this opportunity to wear my birch trees tie to celebrate both the International Day of Forests (today, sponsored by the United Nations) and Birch Tree Day on the French Republican Calendar (next Wednesday).

27 March 18

Today is Birch Tree Day, on the French Republican Calendar (7 Germinal). Recent snow storms took down some branches from our river birch trees, but our arborist has helped us clean it up!

26 March 17

Today marks the birthday of Robert Frost (1874-1963). Among his many poems celebrating woods and trees are "Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening," "The Road Less Taken," and (most directly related to my tie) "Birches." (Tomorrow is also Birch Tree Day, 7 Germinal, on the French Republican Calendar.) I am wearing my Kentucky Wildcat socks to help UK win its game today against North Carolina, to reach the Final Four in this year's NCAA Tournament.

18 September 16

My mother (-in-law) Wilma Wollenweber celebrated her 87th birthday on Friday, and today is my first opportunity to wear her choice of a tie for me to wear! She loves fall themes, and these birch trees are perfectly suited to the season.

Today's double-duty attire celebrates both Sweater Day (yesterday, honoring the 1928 birthday of Mister Rogers) and the International Day of Forests (today, sponsored by the United Nations). This tie also anticipates Birch Tree Day on the French Republican Calendar, coming up on 27 March. The book I'm holding is titled "The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers: Spiritual Insights from the World's Most Beloved Neighbor."

For her birthday today my sister Gloria Rae Huizenga requested my birch trees tie, with the Atlantic style knot. I'm very happy to comply with my big sister's wishes!

Saturday is the International Day of Forests, sponsored by the United Nations. It makes a great occasion for me to wear this new tie, featuring birch trees!
