1 February 23

Today I'm happy to wear my Dr. Seuss tie featuring some of the characters from "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish." It's World Read Aloud Day. I won't get to read to my grandchildren until tomorrow, but I will spend some time reading aloud from PowerPoint slides to my class in Beginning Ethics! Today is also National Freedom Day, celebrating our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, on the anniversary (from 1865) of President Abraham Lincoln's signing a proclamation that became the 13th Amendment (outlawing slavery) later that year.

Today is a new-to-me celebration called "Read a Child a  Book You Like Day." Would you like to guess what book I read with my granddaughter?

2 April 20

Today is International Chidren's Book Day, honoring the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875)! I think that explains why I'm wearing my tie that features the wonderful watery characters from Dr. Seuss' "One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish." To match the spirit of the day, I'm pretty sure they are swimming in international waters. Can you identify my two friends?

5 September 18

A special event for grandparents at The Growing Place! Nate's preschool class decided to invite grandparents to come today to read picture books, and both great-grandma (Grammy) Wollenweber and I were on hand. (This was part of a run-up to the "official" Grandparents Day, coming up on Sunday.) I wore my one-fish-two-fish-red-fish-blue-fish tie, and of course I read that book! Then they listened as I read another book titled "My Grandpa is Great!"

Today we are happy to celebrate Mallie's preschool "graduation" from The Growing Place -- she will turn 5 years old in July! I think this is an excellent day to celebrate with a Dr. Seuss tie.

Happy Young Readers Day! "One-fish-two-fish-red-fish-blue-fish" happens to be one of Mallie Kleppinger's favorite books. I've also read "Are You My Mother?" with her and Nate this week. Young Readers Day is always the second Tuesday in November.

This is American Education Week, and today is "Education Support Professionals Day." It's designed primarily to honor classroom aides and reading consultants, etc., but I'm going to claim it for myself because my job supports the teaching of about 1000 instructors at Eastern Kentucky University. (And I hope I do it quite professionally). Do you remember who helped you first learn about counting and colors and fish?

Today is our daughter Amanda Wheeler's birthday! She is starting a job as a PRESCHOOL TEACHER in a few weeks, and so she chose one of my "Dr. Seuss" ties for me to wear today.

27 June 11

Today starts "Fish Are Friends, Not Food!" week. The theme, originating from the shark support group scene in "Finding Nemo," has been adopted by PETA to urge us all to be ichthyophiles.
