29 October 25

Happy Birthday, Jennifer Fairchild! Jennifer is a professor of communications at Eastern Kentucky University. We had shared experiences with Blackboard, and we crossed paths when my office was in the Combs Classroom Building. She asked me to wear my UK Wildcat tie because . . .

  • I received my MA and my Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Kentucky.
  • Also, our dear family friend, Malachi Moreno, who we have known since his birth, is a freshman at UK and a member of the men’s basketball team. I never thought I would personally know a member of the men’s basketball team at UK.
  • As a lifelong fan of UK basketball, and a family friend of the Morenos, I am so proud of Malachi, and look forward to this year’s basketball season. So, I think the UK tie is a perfect choice for my birthday this year.

I share Jennifer's history at UK and have been a fan since the 1970s!

Way back in 1992, I received the Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Kentucky! My graduate work covered everything from Plato to Kant and Hegel to 20th century analytic philosophy, but my main interests were in the philosophy of science. My dissertation explored the then-tempestuous field known as the sociology of scientific knowledge. Teaching introductory philosophy classes at UK and then at EKU eventually blossomed into my "career" in helping faculty use computers for higher education!

19 March 23

Today the University of Kentucky Wildcats play their second game in this year's "March Madness" NCAA Men's basketball tournament. I hope they can win over the Kansas State Wildcats. My tie shows the UK logo that was current until about 5 years ago when they changed the joint of the K to be curved. (Both of our doctoral degrees are from UK, now long ago (1984 and 1992).)

22 March 21

I'm wearing my University of Kentucky Wildcats tie, to "celebrate" this most unusual year when UK is NOT in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Normally in the middle of March our televisions are preoccupied with UK games, but their season ended (with a 9-16 record) on 11 March in the first game of the SEC tournament. My Wildcat cheerleader bear has not had much to cheer about this year!

27 years ago today I received my Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Kentucky! I've been teaching philosophy courses (and a few other subjects) for 38 years, at UK, Berea College, Midway College and Eastern Kentucky University.

Today I'm celebrating the 25th anniversary of being granted my Ph.D. (in philosophy) from the University of Kentucky. My dissertation was titled "Explanations of science: the use of case studies in the sociology of scientific knowledge," where I got to use words like ethnography, falsification, constructivism and ethnomethodology.

Today my tie celebrates the University of Kentucky Wildcat basketball teams! The men's team finished their season yesterday at 27-9 with a loss to Indiana in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The women's team won their first tournament game yesterday and continue their conquest tomorrow with a game against Oklahoma.

7 April 14

TONIGHT the University of Kentucky men's basketball team will beat Connecticut to win this year's national college championship! At least that is the plan, and so our whole family is part of the Big Blue Nation.

32 March 2013

Today I'm deciding to take EKU's "Voluntary Buyout" option and offer my Blackboard expertise to the University of Kentucky. You can tell my wife about this -- she will never believe it!

Today marks TWENTY YEARS since I got my Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky! It was a rainy day but my boys were glad to find shelter with me.

4 March 12

Today is the last day of the regular season for the University of Kentucky men's basketball team. With a win today over Florida they will complete a 16-0 record in the Southeastern Conference, and this will also be the first time UK has a 30-win season. It's not perfect because they lost to Indiana back in December, but they have been "number 1" most of the time.

20 March 11

This is the first day of Spring, and this is also the first weekend of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. As usual the University of Kentucky Wildcats are playing, for the 51st time in the tournament's 72-year history. Kentucky won its first two games to advance into the "Sweet Sixteen" next weekend.

29 March 10

Both the men's and women's basketball teams from the University of Kentucky have reached the "Elite Eight" in the annual NCAA March Madness® tournament. The men's team lost to West Virginia on Saturday, but the women's team won their game over Nebraska on Sunday night. This is probably my best opportunity for the annual wearing of my UK Wildcat tie.

24 March 09

Last night the University of Kentucky men's basketball team won a very close game against Creighton University, in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. They were not playing as "usual" in the NCAA Tournament, mainly because of a string of late-season conference losses. But they played well in their consolation-tournament games with UNLV and Creighton.
