Today is World Meteorological Day. Of course meteorology is important every day, but this annual celebration marks the formation of the World Meteorological Organization in 1950. The two radar maps on my tie cover a region near Lake of the Ozarks, southeast of Kansas City, MO. One section runs north-south from Warsaw to Aldrich, and the other from Camdenton to Lebanon. The National Weather Service reports that radar (RAdio Detection And Ranging) has been used since the 1940s to gather weather information and help predict the movement of weather systems. Today is also the 165th anniversary (1857) of the first operation of an elevator, in a New York department store, by Elisha Graves Otis.
