It's Cucumber Day! Larry the Cucumber, and Bob the Tomato, from VeggieTales®, are here to celebrate. My tie shows the guys from "Larry's Lagoon," a VT episode that parodies "Gilligan's Island." Cucumber Day (aka Concombre) traces back to the French Republican Calendar, where they set the 7th day of Messidor to honor the long green vegetable.

My tie also honors the birthdays of Phil Vischer (16 June) and Mike Nawrocki (8 July), the co-creators of VeggieTales®.

On 26 September 1964 (59 years ago) the world was treated to the premiere of "Gilligan's Island"! The show's theme song may stir up many memories of the castaways for you. VeggieTales created its parody, "Larry's Lagoon," in 1994. My tie shows Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber in their shipmate costumes.

On this date in 1964, television viewers enjoyed their first laughs at "Gilligan's Island," a wonderfully silly situation comedy about seven castaways on an "uncharted desert isle." Thirty years later the producers of VeggieTales® created "Larry's Lagoon" as a parody, with Bob the Tomato as the captain and Larry Cucumber as the totally goofy first mate.

This past Sunday, 10 May, marked the 127th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that the tomato is a vegetable, not a fruit. The issue in "Nix v. Hedden" concerned tariffs for interstate commerce. Bob the Tomato, from VeggieTales® fame, doesn't care much about his grocery category as long as he's able to sing and play with Larry the Cucumber.

Yesterday was fairly "sublime" as I celebrated National Argyle Day stylishly. Today's mood is rather different, switching from the sublime to the ridiculous -- honoring the birthday (in 1935) of Bob Denver, most famous as "Gilligan" -- with this Veggie Tales® tie named "Larry's Lagoon." I took the occasion to learn about the history of the phrase "from the sublime to the ridiculous" (which can also be stated in the opposite direction), which is ordinarily traced to the 1795 book "The Age of Reason" by Thomas Paine.

Tomorrow marks the 53rd anniversary of the TV show "Gilligan's Island." My tie shows Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber reliving the parts of the Captain and Gilligan, in the Veggie Tales® episode called "Larry's Lagoon."

TV comedy fans remember Bob Denver mostly as the star of "Gilligan's Island." Many of my friends will also recall his earlier role as Maynard G. Krebs on "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." Bob Denver was born on this date in 1935, and died in 2005. My VeggieTales® tie celebrates that show's episode called "Larry's Lagoon," where Larry the Cucumber recreates some of Gilligan's funny moments.

For a second year -- which makes it a tradition -- Jonathan has invited me to visit with the high school seniors at Richmond First United Methodist Church. We will talk about being with people of other faiths and learning alongside them. I chose a Veggie Tales tie because it's appropriate for any occasion, but it also fits the theme of getting along with all sorts of people (and foods).

My tie celebrates the Veggie Tales® episode named "Larry's Lagoon," taking off from the TV show "Gilligan's Island." While sitting through some staff or committee meetings, I can easily fantasize about living on a deserted island . . .

Yesterday marked the birthday of Bob Denver (January 9, 1935 – September 2, 2005), the actor most famous for becoming "Gilligan" on the TV series "Gilligan's Island." This tie features Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato, from Veggie Tales®, as they spoofed some funny plots from the TV series into a story called "Larry's Lagoon."

Today is the birthday of Phil Vischer, one of the two creators (with Mike Warnocki) of the Veggie Tales® animated characters. I have celebrated Phil's birthday for three days with ties starring Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, the French Peas and Junior Carrot.

Today is the 229th anniversary of New England's Dark Day (1780), when (according the Wikipedia entry) "an unusual darkening of the day sky was observed over the New England states and parts of Canada. The primary cause of the event is believed to have been a combination of smoke from forest fires, a thick fog, and cloud cover. The darkness was so complete that candles were required from noon on. It did not disperse until the middle of the next night." My tie is woolen and midnight blue, on a midnight blue shirt.









Yesterday, for no particular reason, I wore my Veggie Tales® tie featuring "Larry's Lagoon." It was fun and definitely more enlightening than today.
