6 October 23

The creators of the French Republican Calendar selected the humble donkey (âne) to honor on 15 Vendémiaire, the date we call 6 October. My tie shows blue Eeyore, as imagined in the Disney animations of the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. Our garden ornament shows Eeyore with the words "Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them." While that sentiment is clever, it's not actually from the writings of A. A. Milne. My tie bar holds a bowtie noodle because today is National Noodle Day.

6 October 22

On the French Republican Calendar, our date of 6 October is regarded as Donkey Day! So Eeyore is here to say "I thought nobody would notice or care." And the rotini on my tie clip recognizes today's celebration of National Noodle Day. I'm having some "tubettini" noodles in my lunch soup, and I hope you get to enjoy some noodles too!

6 October 21

Today is Âne, 15 Vendémiaire on the French Republican Calendar. That means it's a special day to celebrate DONKEYS. My tie features the blue donkey Eeyore from the Disney® animated productions of Winnie-the-Pooh stories, and we also have a house Donkey like the one in the Shrek movies. Late additional note: the answer for Final Jeopardy! this evening was related to the French Republican Calendar -- and all three contestants failed to write the right question "What is Thermidor?" for the month following Messidor (despite the clue that it was named for "good heat").

4 September 20

Our friend and former pastor Clyde David Burberry celebrated his birthday as usual on 3 September! I was on vacation, so his honor extends to today. He asked me to wear Eeyore, because he likes the blue donkey's attitude that "weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them." CDB's wife Susan thinks that dandelions are weeds, but he knows that it is a flower.

Eeyore is always very surprised to hear that there is a "Donkey Day." He never expects anyone to celebrate donkeyhood, but the creators of the French Republican Calendar deemed that farm animal (Âne) worthy of respect on 15 Vendémiaire. Our "garden rock" featuring Eeyore contains the words "Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them," which is often attributed to Eeyore as a quotation from A. A. Milne, but which actually has no source in Milne's writing. Today is also National Noodle Day!

26-28 April 18

If you happen to be in Austin, Texas this Saturday (28 April), consider joining the celebration of "Eeyore's Birthday Party"! This annual event started in Austin in 1963, to honor the blue donkey from Winnie-the-Pooh stories who suspects that nobody would ever celebrate his birthday (but whose friends surprise him anyway). We don't know Eeyore's actual birthdate. Our garden "rock" featuring Eeyore has these words: "Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them."

3 September 17

Our dear friend-brother Clyde David Burberry is celebrating his birthday today -- and I've sent him a link to a YouTube video of "76 Trombones" -- being played by 76 trombones! (Clyde David actually plays the trumpet, but I don't think there's a song for 76 trumpets.) When I asked him to select my tie for today, he got as far as "the color blue," so Beth and I went to my tie collection and chose my Pooh Eeyore tie . . . even though Eeyore said "Well, okay, if you're sure you really want to wear me" . . .

5 May 16

Oh nuts! Somebody decided to move Great American Grump-Out Day (24 hours with no grumpiness allowed) to Saturday, 7 May. Hmpf. It used to be on 5 May. Of course nobody told Eeyore and me about it, so I guess we can feel good (?) about being grumpy and despondent until then -- when we'll force ourselves to find something that we're supposed to enjoy . . . all day long? (Another site says Grump-Out Day was held yesterday, which means that Eeyore and I missed it and so we don't have to worry about it until 2017.)

Mallie Jayden Elizabeth Kleppinger is TWO YEARS OLD today! She chose my "Eeyore" blue donkey tie for me to wear, and I'm happy to celebrate with her.

6 October 14

As usual, I'm celebrating Donkey Day with my Eeyore tie, but this time I've asked our front porch/garden attendant Eeyore to join me for the photo. He said "this probably won't look good," but I assured him that many of my friends would be happy to see him today. Today is 15 Vendémiaire on the French Republican Calendar, the day chosen to honor the humble donkey.

Today is NATIONAL NOODLE DAY! And so my tie clip holds a noodle, while I eat bowtie noodles with meat sauce at Fazoli's®. I brought Eeyore along too because it's "Donkey Day" on the French Republican Calendar.

06 October 10

Donkey Day on the French Republican Calendar, which I explained best two years ago. Eeyore thought I would never actually wear this tie again, but I told him that SOME people really do appreciate donkeys and blue!

A blue day . . . clouds and spitting rain . . . Beth suggested my Eeyore tie.

06 October 09

Today is Donkey Day, on the French Republican Calendar. I posted the explanation of that calendar on Oct. 19, 2008. Eeyore is very surprised to learn that anyone would ever care to think about donkeys at all.

04 September 08

Eeyore was sure his tie was never going to be chosen, so I had to prove him wrong. Today was about the most ordinary day in a long time. Except that Ben came to visit me in my office.
