13 June 17

Today I'm honoring the birthday of James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), often acclaimed as the "third greatest physicist of all time" after Newton and Einstein. His research into electricity and magnetism set the stage for understanding the entire electromagnetic spectrum and for uniting optics and mechanics. My tie is meant to be "electrifying." I've tied the Trinity knot today for both the trio of physicists and for Trinity Sunday, two days ago.

Today's Trinity knot celebrates the ending of the Council of Nicaea, on this date in 325 CE, with the adoption of the "Nicene Creed" that established the doctrine of the Trinity. I first became acquainted with the Creed as a child, through attending rehearsals of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem (PA) as they sang Bach's choral masterpiece Mass in B Minor. The melodies and counterpoint of the Credo section have stuck with me ever since.

Happy Birthday, Aimee Moiso! Aimee will soon be my newest niece, as she marries C. Nolan Huizenga on 4 June, in Nashville. My tie is golden yellow for Aimee's favorite color, and I'm wearing the Trinity knot because this is Trinity Sunday!

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! He was born in 1904 and died in 1991. I tied my tie with the Trinity knot to help the stripes go in all directions.

Some very thoughtful people celebrate August 17 as "Meaning of 'Is' Day." To help you meditate on the meaning of existence I'm wearing a solid-color lavender tie on a striped lavender-and-white shirt. To get started, think about the fact that what you call "solid" does not actually exist -- what you claim to touch 'is' really almost completely empty space. Or you could consider the question "What is lavender (the color)?" You might also notice that my tie knot 'is' a Trinity -- what a very strange description of reality.

Michaela Kleppinger, here's some confetti for your 19th birthday! This tie's design is based on Frank Lloyd Wright's "Confetti" stained glass windows, and I've used the Trinity knot.

M. C. Escher was born on this date in 1898. He is the artist famous for painting intricate visual puzzles like "Drawing Hands," "Waterfall," and the looping stairs in "Ascending and Descending." My tie's pattern is based on his tessellations of flying fish. A tessellation is a drawing that fills the plane with repeating geometric units, like interlocking puzzle pieces or tiles on a floor. I think Escher would be very happy with the "loopiness" of the Trinity knot!

Today's tricolor tie celebrates Trinity Sunday. I've tied it with the "Trinity" knot! I bought this tie two years ago for a special-occasion "emergency" and it was not on my index until today.
