7 November 25

"Poppin' Fresh!", the Pillsbury Doughboy, turned 60 years old on November 7th! He appeared in his first television commercial in 1965. The background on my tie has the words "Dough Cool" because he's wearing his cool sunglasses. Today also marks the birthday of nuclear physicist Lise Meitner (1878-1968), who made significant discoveries in that field in 1930-1960. She was nominated many times for the Nobel Prizes in chemistry and physics but never won the award. She is now memorialized with the naming of meitnerium, element 109.

27 June 23

National Sunglasses Day is celebrated on 27 June. I don't have sunglasses to wear because my lenses transition to shade in bright light, so I'm wearing my Pillsbury® Doughboy® tie where "Poppin' Fresh" is in cognito. I am also sporting my eyeglasses tie clip! This date is also the birthday of Bob Keeshan (1927-2004), famous as the grandfatherly host of the wonderful Captain Kangaroo children's television programs, first telecast in 1955. He started in television as Clarabelle the Clown on the Howdy Doody Show. By a strange coincidence from searching with Google today I found a photo of an auction lot of sunglasses originally worn in episodes of Captain Kangaroo!

The Pillsbury Doughboy, "Poppin Fresh"®, was trademarked on 4 August 1970. I have something else to celebrate on that day, so I'm wearing my "Dough Cool" tie today! He's wearing sunglasses to look very cool. As in the animated commercial, he giggles a little when someone tickles my tie.

This is the 56th anniversary of the first Pillsbury Doughboy® television commercial! Happy Birthday, "Poppin' Fresh." His dark sunglasses on my tie show him as "Dough Cool."

Tomorrow (7 November) marks the 55th "birthday" for Poppin' Fresh®, the Pillsbury Doughboy®. He first appeared in a television advertisement in 1965. On my tie he's wearing sunglasses to disguise himself as "Dough Cool," as it says on the tie's background.

Are you good at "reading between the lines"? My shirt is covered with lines but I don't know what you might be able to find there. September is Subliminal Communications Month, and I'll bet you didn't get that message yet, so now it's out in the open. Many studies of subliminal communications focus on how commercial advertisements and logos can be seen as concealing secrets. My tie features Poppin' Fresh, the Pillsbury Doughboy®, wearing sunglasses as a bit of "disguise." Behind him, the dark background embeds words that say that he is "Dough Cool."

It's National Sunglasses Day! "Poppin' Fresh," the Pillsbury Doughboy®, is celebrating with me today, showing that he is "Dough Cool." Be kind to your eyes and shield them from ultraviolet radiation! Post your own photo with the hashtag #SunglassSelfie.

7 November 17

On this date in 1965, American television viewers were first treated to commercials starring "Poppin' Fresh," the Pillsbury Doughboy®. My tie shows the giggling, puffy mini-baker on a background that says "Dough Cool."

I'm wearing the Pillsbury Doughboy® today because it's National Toasted Marshmallow Day and he's the only figure in my tie collection who resembles a marshmallow (particularly his chef's hat). Some people have mistaken him for a "tooth." He does routinely giggle when his tummy is pressed. Old time TV fans can also celebrate today's birthdays of Raymond Massey (the old-guy mentor on "Dr. Kildare," 1896), Shirley Booth (Hazel, on "Hazel," 1898), and Fred MacMurray (father Steve Douglas on "My Three Sons," 1908).

Poppin' Fresh®, the Pillsbury® Doughboy, is here to help me celebrate National Pastry Day!

Did you laugh? Good for you! Today is the 68th birthday of Dr. "Patch" Adams, founder of the Gesundheit Institute, and firm believer that laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process. He has brought "clowning" into medicine, as shown in the Robin Williams movie Patch Adams (released in 1998). I chose my Pillsbury® Doughboy tie just for giggles.

30 August 11

I know that the Pillsbury Doughboy® is made of biscuit dough (of course). But he looks like he is made of marshmallows, which makes this tie appropriate for National Toasted Marshmallow Day, celebrated annually on August 30. Note that you may also toast marshmallows happily on National S'mores Day, which I missed back on August 10.

31 October 10

We don't do the regular "stuff" associated with Halloween, but just for fun I'm going to be "in disguise" today, pretending to be a Water Furnace (geothermal heat) technician, and also let the Pillsbury Doughboy® show up (as Dough Cool, of course).

Today may mark the conclusion of my first 57 years, but I'm still "Poppin' Fresh."

ooray for National Pastry Day! "Dough Cool" thinks December is a very good time to bake pastries of all sorts.

I almost missed the message that September is Subliminal Communications Month. It's not too late, because we have a whole day left to try to manipulate others without their awareness.

This tie features the Pillsbury® Doughboy® in disguise as "Dough Cool." You have to get very close to the tie to see that background message. The third picture is from January 2003.

I had no good reason to select the Pillsbury Doughboy® today. The words in the background say "Dough Cool."

Today we started "cooking something new" in the Blackboard system. We are upgrading the software at the beginning of August, and we are educating some faculty about the upcoming changes. So we are "Poppin' Fresh" with new ideas. The Doughboy is wearing shades because, as the tie's background says, he is "Dough Cool." (The tie achieved even greater meaning later in the day, when we baked Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls for a team of youth workers from our church, who spread a lot of mulch and pulled a lot of weeds in our yard!)
