I am declaring today Colorful Lizards Day! I'm celebrating with my multicolored lizards tie, not seen since October 2022. Our lunch today is at Olive Garden, where it's true that we're all family. On this date in 1617, one-way streets were opened in London; it's also National Sponge Cake Day.

Several events worth noting today: (1) It's Reptile Awareness Day, and so I'm wearing my multicolored lizards tie; (2) it's Domestic Violence Awareness Day, also known as Purple Thursday, and so I'm wearing a purple shirt; and (3) today is the first day of the 2021 Kentucky Convergence Conference, focusing on online teaching and learning, where I am one of three people from EKU presenting a talk (remotely) about best practices for storing and sharing large files (videos, PowerPoints, images, etc.).

Today I am living "Where the Wild Things Are"! Famous children's book author Maurice Sendak was born on this date in 1928. (He died in 2012.) I think my multicolored prehistoric (?) lizards are pretty wild. Also born on this date --  Dick Vitale (1939), Cole Porter (1881), and Peter the Great (1672).



For the record -- I wore my "California Mission" tie yesterday, for no special occasion.

On September 15, 1835, Charles Darwin arrived in the Galapagos Islands, and began collecting his observations of wildlife and their environmental constraints. Birds, fish and reptiles were among his most important targets.

My multicolored lizards are celebrating Darwin Day one day late. Charles Darwin was born on Feb. 12, 1809. Lizards, birds and fish were prominent among the variety of animals he studied while formulating the theory of natural selection.

According to my records, it's been a full year since I wore this tie. It honors Darwin's arrival in the Galapagos Islands 175 years ago (1835), and it also honors the birthday of my IT@EKU comrade Margaret Lane.

Today is Margaret Lane's birthday. She is the person at EKU who is most directly responsible for my own position in Information Technology, because she encouraged me to apply for an open "helpdesk consultant" job back in 1996. At my invitation a few weeks ago, she selected the "brightly colored lizards" tie for today, also noting Charles Darwin's arrival in the Galápagos Islands on this date in 1835. There were plenty of lizards for Darwin to observe . . .

Today marks the birthday, in 1901, of Enrico Fermi, nuclear physicist and director of the Manhattan Project, but I have no relevant tie. This tie, featuring multicolored lizards, is in search of an occasion. I wore it on July 3 as well, as a "random" choice.
