15 May 26

The McDonald brothers opened their first restaurant on 15 May 1940, in San Bernardino, CA. It was originally a barbecue drive-in, then switched to hamburgers. My tie shows flags and McDonald's food.

2 July 23

It was on this date in 1776 that the Continental Congress adopted a resolution for independence from England. Two days later they completed the text of the "Declaration." John Hancock signed it on July 4, and then most of the other representatives signed it on August 2. John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail on July 3 that he thought July 2 would be "celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival" marking the "day of deliverance." He was correct about the significance of the event on July 2 but has been proven wrong about which date became the holiday.

This tie celebrates McDonald's® as a true symbol of American freedom. To prove our own independence, our family is gathering for lunch today at Cracker Barrel®.

5 July 22

I haven't worn this tie in nearly two years. McDonald's® is one of my dependable favorites when I need quick food, and the first days in July are the right time to wave the American flag.

It's National Cheeseburger Day! Nobody knows why! But McDonald's® is selling double cheeseburgers for 50 cents, so that's going to be our main dish for supper. My tie features images of all sorts of products from the "Scottish bistro," including cheeseburgers silhouetted on red blocks.

Today you can pick your own celebration! My tie honors the opening of the first McDonald's restaurant in 1940 (by the McDonald brothers), in San Bernardino, California. Other options include the 1252 papal bull (by Pope Innocent IV) setting out the rules for the legitimate torture of heretics, the 1869 founding of the National Woman Suffrage Association (by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton), and the birthdays of baseball greats George Brett (1953) and John Smoltz (1967).

21 July 16

Today is National Junk Food Day! My McDonald's® tie features burgers, drinks, company symbols and American flags. And I have some appropriate snacks for the day. If you need something else to celebrate today you could choose from "Get To Know Your Customers Day" or the birthdays of Ernest Hemingway (1899), Marshall McLuhan (1911), Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam) (1948), and Robin Williams (1951).

25 August 15

Today is "National Secondhand Wardrobe Day," so I'm wearing one of my own Goodwill treasures. It is a hand-me-down most likely from a McDonald's manager.

As in 2008, my tie today celebrates the adoption of the resolution for American independence. The historical reference is here.

Yesterday was a "Norton" anniversary, the day in 1998 when Norton Utilities released the final version of Norton Commander, a DOS program to manage all the applications on your system from a text menu. So I wore my "Norton" tie.
