National Lighthouse Day, on 7 August, honors the act of Congress (Bill 9) in 1789 that created federal support for the building and maintenance of lighthouses. This great tie, named "Sentinels" by designer Erich Holch, was a birthday gift many years ago from my sister Faith Lang, who loves lighthouses.

In 2024 I followed tradition for the last Monday in January, celebrating Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. In so doing, I missed the opportunity to honor my sister (-in-law) Faith's birthday. So I'm making up for that lacuna now by offering her two tie-days, to-day and to-morrow. She asked me to wear my lighthouses tie, because she loves lighthouses, and to use the Trinity knot -- so here it is! Happy Birthday Eve, Faith!

After a weeklong respite from work I return to wearing ties! My EKU friend Brittany Strube celebrated her birthday on 13 May. We first met at a technology conference in November 2022, and as we exchanged stories I showed her my tie blog -- and promised to honor her in May. Brittany works in EKU's Instructional Design Center, helping faculty with online courses. She has been spending time recently in Boston and Rhode Island, and asked me to wear my tie showing lighthouses!

Today is National Lighthouse Day, proclaimed in 1989 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Lighthouse Act by President George Washington. The Lighthouse Act provided federal support for the construction and maintenance of lighthouses. As described by President George H. W. Bush, "these impressive structures have long symbolized safety, vigilance, and faithfulness. Often isolated and repeatedly tested by the ravages of storm and sea, lighthouses are also monuments to courage and determination of the people who built them and the keepers who have maintained them." My tie shows many different lighthouse designs.

My sister-in-law Faith Lang loves lighthouses, and so she asked me to wear this tie for her birthday today! Faith is the Director of Guest Services at the Society of the Transfiguration, in Glendale, Ohio. She helps organize and manage retreats and other events. I know she hopes to be able to get to Rhode Island and Cape Cod to see lighthouses in real life soon!
