Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991), best known as "Dr. Seuss," was born on 2 March. His birthday is widely celebrated as Read Across America Day. My tie shows red, yellow, green and blue fish in a bubbly ocean scene. He published over 60 children's books. A few of them have been criticized (appropriately) for some racist expressions, but the great majority of his works bring out joy and laughter for children and adults. Today, as on most Tuesdays, I'm spending my morning enjoying life with my granddaughter Evelyn! We will read some books, tell some stories and have some snacks and lunch. One of our books will definitely be Dr. Seuss' "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish," to match up with my tie! (Today also happens to be National Care For Kids Day! I hope you will find some kids to care for.)

Happy Dr. Seuss Day #2! Today's tie features the red-fish-blue-fish-yellow-fish-green-fish from "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish" cavorting through bubbly water. And Marvin K. Mooney wanted to be included, although it is definitely time for him to (please) GO NOW! I also must promote the wonderful story named "Hooray for Diffendoofer Day!" which was completed by others after Theodore Geisel's death. (By the way, I am aware of the news that critics are challenging several of Dr. Seuss' books for presenting what they call hurtful cultural stereotypes. Of course I do not defend stereotyping, but the themes of "diversity" and "tolerance" and "breaking down artificial barriers" infuse all of Dr. Seuss' books so strongly that I will continue to enjoy them myself and with all children everywhere.)

Yesterday (2 October) was the International Day of Nonviolence, honoring the birthday (in 1869) of Mohandas Gandhi. I chose this tie for its calm deep ocean scene, and the smiling fish remind me of those great words about nonviolence from "Finding Nemo" -- "Fish are friends, not food!"

We're going underwater today to celebrate the birthday of Jacques Cousteau (in 1910). He was one of the inventors of SCUBA in 1943 and became famous for his deep sea explorations from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Today is WORLD WATER DAY, a time designated by the United Nations to reflect on your "water footprint" and on the fact that at least a billion people around the world are chronically hungry and thirsty because we (in the overdeveloped world) absorb so much of the world's water into our food. "The World is Thirsty Because We are Hungry" expresses the theme of World Water Day 2012. My fishy tie has a watery theme, and I'm wearing a blue "Water Furnace" shirt. And blue is also the favorite color of Janet Johnson, one of my EKU friends, whose birthday is March 22!
