Peter Schickele (1935-2024) was born 91 years ago today. He began discovering the unpublished musical works of "P. D. Q. Bach" in 1965, performing them worldwide through 2018. July 17 is also the anniversary of the premiere (in 1717) of Handel's "Water Music," and marks the birthday of jazz musician and pianist Vince Guaraldi (1928-1976), most famous for his compositions for the animated Peanuts® cartoons. 

My tie shows Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck with musical instruments. There are at least three Disney cartoons closely related to the images on this tie – “The Band Concert” (1935), “Mickey’s Amateurs” (1937) and "Symphony Hour" (1942). All have the three characters, and there are scenes with tubas/sousaphones.

My EKU friend Jennifer Fairchild celebrates her birthday every 29 October. She is a professor in the School of Communication. Jennifer loves all things Disney and asked me to wear this tie for her today, because Mickey Mouse is her favorite character! Another comrade in the School of Communication, Ginny Whitehouse, celebrated her birthday yesterday. There are two cartoons closely related to the images on this tie – “Mickey’s Amateurs” and “The Band Concert.” Both have Mickey, Donald Duck and Goofy, and there are scenes with tubas/sousaphones, and Mickey’s Amateurs has a microphone, but so far I can’t find any images that match the ones on my tie. Happy Birthday, Jennifer and Ginny!

Today, Mickey Mouse is 90 years old! His first sound cartoon, "Steamboat Willie," was released in 1928. This marks the 9th time in eleven years that I've worn this tie to celebrate Mickey's birthday! There are at least three Disney cartoons closely related to the images on this tie – “The Band Concert” (1935), “Mickey’s Amateurs” (1937) and "Symphony Hour" (1942). Mickey Mouse was first seen in "Steamboat Willie," released on 18 November 1928. So Mickey Mouse is 89 years old! My tie shows him singing into a microphone while Goofy plays the tuba -- and then Donald Duck comes out of the tuba!

Today's tie celebrates the debut of Mickey Mouse around this time (that is, on 18 November) in 1928.

Today is Mickey Mouse's "birthday"! His first cartoon appearance was on this date in 1928. And now I've worn this tie for this occasion six times since 2008. According to one fan site (on Angelfire.com), "Mickey Mouse's favorite sayings are: 'Gosh!' 'Oh boy!' 'That sure is swell!' 'Aw, gee...' 'See ya soon!'" In 1935 the League of Nations presented Walt Disney with a special medal in recognition of the fact that Mickey Mouse was "a symbol of universal good will."

This is Mickey Mouse's "screen birthday." He first appeared in the cartoon "Steamboat Willie," released on this date in 1928. This is my only tie featuring Mickey Mouse, so I wear it every year around this day. (Gift hint -- does anyone else have a different Mickey Mouse tie?)

This is Mickey Mouse's 81st birthday. "Making his debut in "Steamboat Willie" at the Colony Theatre in New York City on November 18, 1928, Mickey went on to star in over 120 different cartoons" (credit to Disney Archives). My tie also includes Goofy, who came on the scene first in 1932, and Donald Duck, introduced in 1934. (I goofily wore this tie on Sept. 20 and have added a correction to that day's entry!)

Note added in November: I GOOFED UP. I don't know which calendar page is mistaken, but Mickey's proper birthday is November 18. It's still a nice tie and it's fun to wear.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the release of the first sound-synchronized cartoon feature, "Steamboat Willie," which introduced Mickey Mouse to the world. On my tie Mickey and Goofy are playing various musical instruments.

No special event uncovered for today, but I did get to celebrate my birthday for yet another time at lunch with Parker Owens and John Young. This tie shows Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck goofing around with Goofy who is trying to play the tuba. That's a good party theme.
