When you have a necktie featuring frogs on lily pads, you have to wear it on a great holiday called National Frog Jumping Day! It occurs annually on 13 May, and it is related to the four-day-long International Frog Jump, at the Calaveras County Fair (in California). Legend has it that Mark Twain overheard a story in a local tavern that inspired his first published work, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Our own stuffy green frog jumped into our home through the book "It's Mine!" by Leo Lionni.

Today is National Frog Jumping Day! My tie shows lots of frogs, some jumping, some sitting on lily pads.

It's National Superheroes Day! More importantly, today is the sixth birthday of Nathanael (Nate) David Howland Kleppinger! He asked me to wear my frogs tie for him. He is a big fan of superheroes, particularly Batman and Robin and as many others as he can get as Lego® figures.

Happy Grandparents Day! To honor my grandchildren, I'm wearing this "frogs" tie that grandson Nate David gave me two years ago. And it's clipped to my shirt with the tie bar that represents granddaughter Mallie. But the tie is also very appropriate to celebrate the birthday of Luigi Galvani (1737-1798), an early experimenter with
electricity. Galvani is famous for reporting how frogs' legs would
"jump" when touched with an electrically charged rod, even though they
were not attached to a frog! The idea that mundane, ordinary electricity
worked inside living organisms was revolutionary because it
contradicted the beliefs about a "vital force" that separated living
things from the rest of the world.

National Frog Jumping Day is celebrated on 13 May every year. It honors Mark Twain's 1865 short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," which was his first great success as a writer. Calaveras County, California, has held public frog-jumping events since 1893, culminating in this year's edition of the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee on 17-20 May. My frogs tie was a birthday present from grandson Nate in 2016. I know today is also Mother's Day, but our family's observance has been delayed until all our mothers and children can participate, currently set for 27 May!

This tie featuring frogs was a birthday present from Nathanael and his family. Today I'm jumping ahead to Friday to honor the birthday of Luigi Galvani (1737-1798), an early experimenter with electricity. Galvani is famous for reporting how frogs' legs would "jump" when touched with an electrically charged rod, even though they were not attached to a frog! The idea that mundane, ordinary electricity worked inside living organisms was revolutionary because it contradicted the beliefs about a "vital force" that separated living things from the rest of the world.
