Today is our son-by-inclusion David Anderson's thirtysomethingst birthday! He recently began working in the student services area at DePaul University, and so he chose to have me wear my Chicago map tie. Very glad to do it!

On this date in 1837, the city of Chicago was incorporated, so I'm showing off my map of downtown Chicago. Also of note -- today is National Grammar Day, and the birthday of theoretical physicist George Gamow (1904-1968). I can't resist mentioning the connection of Gamow with two other famous physicists in the 1948 publication of the "Alpher-Bethe-Gamow" paper, whose authorship is a pun on the Greek letters αβγ. Gamow and Ralph Alpher were the real authors, but they included Hans Bethe to create the historical joke. Gamow later encouraged another physicist to change his name to "Delter" so they might be able to construct a quadruple pun, but the fourth man did not follow through. I wish I could draw a connection for any of these physicists to Chicago.

No particular holiday today -- one calendar calls it National Candy Day, but I prefer more specific celebrations for chocolates and peppermints. One week from today I'll be in CHICAGO for the National Collegiate Honors Council, so today I'm wearing my Chicago city map!

Chicago was incorporated as a city on this date in 1837. I like this tie and I'm glad I have an occasion to wear it!

Chicago! I drove to the Windy City on Friday, and now I'm driving home again today. I got to spend all day Saturday with David Anderson, visiting the Field Museum and the John Hancock Observatory, and enjoying great Greek, Chinese and American food. David had a room at the Palmer House Hilton, because he was presenting a paper at the Midwest Political Science Association convention.

My parents (-in-law) are with us these days, as we get ready for the wedding on Saturday. Mom (Wilma Wollenweber) chose my Chicago map tie for me to wear today.

I don't care about the fact that I wore this tie on 24 April 08. Today is my birthday and I get to wear whatever tie I choose. Besides, this marks the date in 1830 when the plans for the city of Chicago were laid out.
