5 March 26

Happy Birthday 🎊 to my friend and “old” EKU comrade Beth Blanchard! She gave me this tie in 2013 and I don’t recall the story. I call the design “gray and blue mountains.”

21 April 23

When I asked granddaughter Evelyn what she could see on my tie today, she immediately said "MOUNTAINS!" -- which was wonderful because that is exactly what I wanted to be showing. Tomorrow (22 April) is Earth Day, and today (21) is the birthday of environmentalist John Muir (1838-1914). Muir has become known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks."

21 April 21

I'm wearing my gray-and-blue-mountains tie to honor the birthday (in 1838) of John Muir, the "Father of Environmentalism." He was known as John of the Mountains. As described in Wikipedia, he was "an influential Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States of America." And tomorrow we treehuggers get to celebrate Earth Day 2021!

John Muir (April 21, 1838 – December 24, 1914) also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks", was an influential Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States of America. (Wikipedia) My tie's design looks like gray and blue mountains.

On this date in 1769, frontiersman Daniel Boone (1734-1820) first began exploring the valleys and forests of the present day Bluegrass State of Kentucky. Boone founded the village of Boonesborough, Kentucky which is one of the first American settlements west of the Appalachians. To celebrate National Boone Day I'm wearing my gray/blue "mountains" tie and visiting the Daniel Boone statue at Eastern Kentucky University.

Happy Birthday, Jonathan Albert Kleppinger! For more than 20 years Jonathan has been a fan of the Colorado Rockies, dating back to his first T-ball team. For my tie today he selected my gray-and-blue-mountains design, to honor both the Rockies' current win streak and the 140th anniversary of Colorado's statehood!

8 March 16

To help celebrate her birthday today, my cousin Sally Ann Miller Sheets suggested a tie featuring "mountain tops telling of the trip upward!" Today is also the 16th birthday of Alyssa Kleppinger, daughter of another cousin! I hope she likes this tie too.

Are you finding good reasons to panic today? It's INTERNATIONAL PANIC DAY, when it's OK to be in temporary panic as long as you know that it will all be over soon. Last year I wore my chain-mail tie, to prove that I was prepared for anything. This year I am being proactive, by wearing a shirt and tie in the most comforting colors -- blue and gray -- including a pattern reminding you of pleasant mountain landscapes and smoothly flowing streams. If you need even more help, remember the words on the cover of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ("DON'T PANIC!").

26 March 13

March 26 is celebrated everywhere (?) as "Make Your Own Holiday Day." If you need a birthday for your focus, you could pick from Robert Frost (1874), Tennessee Williams (1911) or Leonard Nimoy (1931). My tie's pattern celebrates themes from mountains and water, and was found for me by Beth Blanchard on a recent trip to far northwestern Washington.
