17 October 23

Today's tie, covered with nutritious foods, celebrates World Food Day (every 16 October). I enjoy most of the foods pictured here except rabbit. But in the spirit of world food I'll recognize that it's common in Chinese culture (62% of the world's consumption).

Tomorrow (17 June) is National Eat Your Vegetables Day. My tie honors that holiday today because I'm not working on Fridays during the "Summer Advantage Schedule" for EKU. The tie shows many vegetables and other nutritious foods. We eat a lot of vegetables at least several times a week because we are longtime share-members in the CSA (Consumer Supported Agriculture) project of Lazy Eight Stock Farm (in Paint Lick, KY). We'll enjoy these potatoes soon!

16 October 20

Today is World Food Day, sponsored by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. Its purpose is to advance the cause of providing food (of course) to all the nations of the world. So my tie features images of all sorts of nutritious foods! Today is also a red-letter day in our family, marking the tenth anniversary of the wedding of Ben Kleppinger and Amanda Wheeler!

24-25 October 19

Today is National Food Day! I'm not sure what that means, but I'm wearing my nutritious food tie anyway. And the tie has some beets, which suits Friday's designation as Beet Day on the French Republican Calendar.

It's National Spinach Day! My nutritious-foods tie shows spinach (or other leafy greens). Our own source of spinach (and other leafy greens and much more) is the Lazy 8 Stock Farm in Paint Lick, KY, from which we get our produce weekly through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

18 October 17

Today I'm making up for Monday's celebration of World Food Day. (EKU was on "Fall Break" for two days.) My tie features many nutritious foods, including beets, tomatoes, chicken and corn.

24 October 16

I missed celebrating World Food Day a week ago (16 October), so we'll just serve it together with National Food Day today! National Food Day was created in 2011 by CSPI (Center for Science in the Public Interest) as "a celebration of healthy, affordable and sustainably produced food and a grassroots campaign for better food policies." My tie's label says "Good Nutrition is Food for Thought," and it is based on art by "Nelson" who was 8 when he did the drawings. Celebrations of food are central to Farm Church but I don't know if they have planned anything special for today.

22 June 16

My first nephew C. Nolan Huizenga achieves his "perfect square" age (49) this Friday. So I'm celebrating a few days early with a "Save the Children" tie that combines several of his favorite things: tomatoes and other vegetables,  and bunny rabbits, on a midnight blue background. Nolan also loves space science, and with some imagination you might be able to see these foods and animals floating weightlessly. We were very happy to be with Nolan and Aimee Moiso in Nashville earlier this month for their beautiful wedding! And Nolan has taught me to love the hymn "O God, Beyond All Praising" -- which can give you a wonderful earworm if you need one.

13 May 15

It's just a Sponge Bob® Nerdypants kind of day. Do gray khakis count as nerdy pants?

For the record I wore my "nutritious food" tie yesterday, a little late for World Fair Trade Day (on Saturday).

31 August 14

It's harvest time! We are enjoying tomatoes, squash, zucchini, Swiss chard, etc. This tie celebrates all kinds of nutritious foods. (For fans of snack foods, today is National Trail Mix Day.)

Today is World Food Day! What kind of small changes (or maybe big ones) can you make in your life, to help end hunger? You can get some ideas at http://www.worldfooddayusa.org/act. Today is also the middle of National Food Bank Week.

18 October 12

This is "Food Week of Action," including World Food Day on Oct. 16. This is "a special time to celebrate God's Creation and the people throughout the food chain that provide life-sustaining food." (Presbyterian Hunger Program) My tie today celebrates all kinds of food!

Today I'm celebrating BEETS! Beth has been growing beets in our garden, and last week we ate some excellent samples of the crop. My tie features a collection of many nutritious foods, including several beets.

8 January 12

Some occasions to note: (1) January is "Tubers and Dried Fruit Month"; (2) January 8 is the birthday of Elvis Presley (1935-1977) -- but I have no velvet tie; (3) January 8-14 is "Universal Letter-Writing Week." My non-velvet tie celebrates all kinds of nutritious foods, including some tubers and dryable fruits, and I have already written my thank-you note for this gift. Does posting on a blog constitute writing a universal letter?
