John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, was born on 12 November 1842. Lord Rayleigh became a theoretical physicist, winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1904. He is famous for describing how the sun's rays interact with the earth's atmosphere. The sky appears blue to us because of the phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering. My shiny blue tie is very suitable for this occasion!
