Today's tie is covered with the Methodist cross-and-flame logo. I borrowed it from our great friend and "adopted" brother Clyde David Burberry, to wear it for the memorial service for Rev. Charles Wesley Bertrand (1929-2022). Charles was a very special family friend and personal pastor over the last 42 years. We met him and his wife Elizabeth in 1980, at Centenary United Methodist Church in Lexington, KY. Around 1984 he was assigned to the UMC church in Louisa, about 150 miles away. We visited with them quite often and our boys enjoyed playing with Charles and Elizabeth's grandchildren. We were all surprised when his next appointment was to Wilmore, KY, and then later to Berea, KY. When Charles retired, both of our families moved to new houses on the same street, about 300 feet apart! So after Louisa the Bertrands always moved closer to us. Beth and I have fond memories of the encouragement Charles gave us during our dissertation writing -- and Beth dedicated hers to him!
