The history of the legal pad goes back to William Holley, born around this date in 1860. While working in a paper mill in Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1888, Holley gathered up the scraps (called sortings) from other projects and bound them into a useful pad. He soon added the familiar lines, and then added the vertical scores when a judge wanted a column for notes on the main text. The origins of the familiar yellow color are unknown.
