20 February 22

On 20 February, 1872, the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened in New York City. Its original location was a building at 681 Fifth Avenue, and it moved to its current address (Fifth Avenue and 82nd Street) in 1880. It is the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere. My tie featuring sunbursts and calendar cycles is the one in my collection that is labeled for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Happy 150th Birthday, "Met"! The old image shows the opening reception in the picture gallery at 681 Fifth Avenue, February 20, 1872; wood-engraving published in Frank Leslie's Weekly, March 9, 1872.
