My tie honors the 90th anniversary of the dedication of the Empire State Building in New York City. More significantly for me, this is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Lorenzo Dow York (1871-1955), my maternal grandfather. He met me when I was an infant, and somewhere there is a photo of "Papa York" holding me; my sister Gloria has some memories of him from her childhood. He was a public school teacher and principal in several locations on Long Island, New York.
