22 June 20

According to some calendars, this is the date in 1847 when an American sailor named Hanson Gregory "invented" the doughnut. (Well, someone had to do it, sometime!) The legend says that Gregory was dissatisfied with the greasiness of the pastries on his ship, particularly the raw centers, and punched a hole with either the ship's tin pepper box or with one of the spokes on the ship's navigation wheel. After he taught his mother about making the rings, she added nut fillings to the centers. My tie shows various doughnuts, and when I wear it on a beige shirt, it looks like there's an actual hole in the tie!
