Today marks the birthday of graphic artist M. C. Escher (1898-1972). He is most famous for his fantastic depictions of "impossible" environments and perspectives, as in the "Other World" featured on my tie, where the birds are standing on many perpendicular planes -- or should we say that gravity pulls in many directions, or should we say that up and down are purely relative to the observer?
