Dmitri Mendeleev was born on this date 177 years ago (1834). He is credited with "inventing" the periodic table of the elements. He correlated the properties of similar groups of elements with their combining weights, and predicted the properties and weights of several as-yet-undiscovered elements to fill in gaps in the patterns in his table.
