The third Saturday in March is National Quilting Day! My patchwork quilt tie was a gift from a resident at the Telford Terrace nursing home in 2012, where I was a weekly visitor from 2000-2020. My Sunday evening visits began when my father moved into assisted living in Allentown, PA, much too far away for frequent contact. The director at Telford Terrace suggested that I could visit with those residents instead, and so I read Bible stories and shared hymns with them for twenty years, until the COVID-19 pandemic closed those meetings down.

Today (25 August) is National Secondhand Wardrobe Day! I have more than 30 ties that count as hand-me-downs from people I have known, plus another dozen (?) bought for me at Goodwill. This one was given to me by the wife of a resident at Telford Terrace nursing home, about 11 years ago. I was visiting the residents every week, and I had acquired the nickname of "The Tie Man." It's a nice design based on patchwork quilts!

8 April 22
I'm using my patchwork quilt tie to celebrate a potpourri of events for 8 April: birthday of author Barbara Kingsolver (1955); death of artist Pablo Picasso (1973); patent for a fire escape (a large bucket on a pulley) (1766); the first sale of milk in glass bottles (1879); and Hana Matsuri (Buddhist flower festivals, in Japan). The tie was given to me by a Telford Terrace (nursing home) resident -- a longtime quilter -- ten years ago, having enjoyed seeing my ties every Sunday!
