For my second tie today I felt very moo-ved to celebrate Cow Day (Vache, 15 Pluviôse) on the French Republican Calendar. (The French revolutionaries revised the calendar so that each day honored a crop, a farm tool or a farm animal.) My tie features the comic art of Gary Larson: a cow sitting at the side of a street with a homemade sign that says "BARN-LESS," near a bar named the Cowcatcher; a movie theater named The Udder Palace, showing a movie titled "101 Dead Matadors"; a pair of cows driving a vehicle tagged the "Moofia Staff Car"; and a pair of cigar(?)-smoking bovines wearing a shirt that says "SAME MANURE, DIFFERENT DAY.

Gary Larson, creator of the fabulous Far Side comics, was born on 14 August 1950. My tie shows cow images from many "Far Side" comics, with a cow sitting at the side of a street with a homemade sign that says "BARN-LESS," near a bar named the Cowcatcher; a movie theater named The Udder Palace, showing a movie titled "101 Dead Matadors"; a pair of cows driving a vehicle tagged the "Moofia Staff Car"; and a pair of cigar(?)-smoking bovines wearing a shirt that says "SAME MANURE, DIFFERENT DAY."

Happy Cow Day! On the French Republican Calendar, today (our 3 February) is named Vache, honoring the farm cow.

Today correlates with Cow Day (Vache, 15 Pluviôse) on the French Republican Calendar, used in France from 1793-1805 (Years I-XIII of the Republic). I'm quite sure they took honoring farm cows rather seriously, but Gary Larson used cows in many funny ways in his "Far Side" comics. On my tie they are posing as "barn-less" beggars, driving a "Moofia Staffcar," entering the "Cowcatcher" bar (which is across the street from The Udderplace theater whose marquee says "Now Playing: 101 Dead Matadors"), and wearing a t-shirt that says "Same Manure, Different Day." In 1992, Larson published a collection named "Cows of our Planet." Happy Cow Day!

Here's a "foolish" tie for 1 April, featuring cows from Gary Larson's "Far Side" comics. The tie's image is taken from the endpapers of "The Complete Far Side." The cows --one of Larson's favorite comic themes -- are posing as "barn-less" beggars, driving a "Moofia Staffcar," entering the "Cowcatcher" bar (which is across the street from The Udderplace theater whose marquee says "Now Playing: 101 Dead Matadors"), and wearing a t-shirt that says "Same Manure, Different Day."
