Gideon Sundback (1880-1954) was a Swedish-American electrical engineer, who is most commonly associated with his work in the development of the zipper. He received a patent for the "separable fasterner" on 20 March 1917. My striped tie is special because it is zippered, not tied! Also I am wearing a cardigan to celebrate Sweater Day, honoring the birthday (on 20 March) of "Mister" Fred Rogers (1928-2003). The history of the cardigan sweater is interesting!

Doubly significant historical events today: (Mister) Fred Rogers was born 90 years ago, and this is the date in 1917 when Gideon Sundback received his patent for the zipper! So, I'm participating in "Sweater Day" with my own cardigan, and I'm wearing my one and only zipper tie, given to me last year by David, Rachel and Jamison Haskins. Yes, it tightens simply by "zipping up."

20 March is always "Sweater Day," honoring the birthday (in 1928) of Fred Rogers. "Mister Rogers" always wore a cardigan, with a tie, almost always on a white shirt. Today's double-duty attire celebrates both Sweater Day (yesterday, honoring the 1928 birthday of Mister Rogers) and the International Day of Forests (today, sponsored by the United Nations). This tie also anticipates Birch Tree Day on the French Republican Calendar, coming up on 27 March. The book I'm holding is titled "The Simple Faith of Mister Rogers: Spiritual Insights from the World's Most Beloved Neighbor."

Please, won't you be my neighbor? Happy "Cardigan Day," or "Be My Neighbor Day." My sweater celebrates Fred Rogers' birthday on this date in 1928. My tie celebrates the first day of spring, which actually seems to have been springing up all over since mid-February.

It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood! Yesterday was Fred Rogers' birthday (March 20, 1928 – February 27, 2003), and is celebrated as both "Sweater Day" and "Won't You Be My Neighbor? Day." Today's weather is a bit too warm for sweaters, but I'm wearing my cardigan this morning to honor Mr. Rogers!

Saturday, March 20 is the birthday of Mister (Fred) Rogers (1928-2003). That day is celebrated annually as Sweater Day, in honor of his wardrobe change at the beginning of each day's show. He wasn't a classroom teacher but I think he would be very proud of me to wear a chalkboard tie to celebrate his day.
