Beth helped me get the right look for National Bow Tie Day! This is the eighth time I've celebrated with this cyan tie; three other years I've worn my rubber duckies, and twice I wore my wood bow tie. I began following this tradition in 2012, missing out only in 2015.

This is a "calendar math" day, because 29-8=21. Yesterday (28 August) was the annual celebration of National Bow Tie Day, so this is my first chance to join in with my cyan bow tie. As usual I needed Beth's help to get the knot done! Its electrifying color is appropriate for today's historical tie to the discovery of electromagnetic induction by Michael Faraday in 1831.

Happy Birthday, Jonathan Albert Kleppinger! We've known each other for 30 years, and he heard my voice for months before he introduced himself. He requested this bow tie for today, with the provision that I "make sure people know it's green." Jonathan has a personal crusade to disrupt our ordinary color-category boundaries, and he wants you to see how the color of this tie actually falls better into "green" than "blue." (I don't always agree with my son!) So, I've attached a photo that compares the tie directly with the blue and green patches on a Band-Aids® box. Now you decide!

On this Saturday night, the National Collegiate Honors Council is celebrating its 50th year anniversary with a festive "Gala" -- dinner in the hotel ballroom followed by comedy entertainment from Chicago's own "Second City." To encourage more formal dress at this Gala, the organizers included a "Bow Tie Basics" session in the conference program. I've tied my bow tie a few times before, but it was fun to be helped today by Dr. John Zubizarreta, a past President of NCHC!

Happy Birthday, son (by inclusion) David Haskins! I know that he has been enjoying the day with his wife Rachel and 17-month-old son Jamison. He requested that I wear my bow tie today, and clearly I need more practice to tie it easily and perfectly, like those worn by Dr. Who, Bill Nye, Indiana Jones, Karl Marx and Winston Churchill.

It's National Bow Tie Day! I am not proficient at tying this item of haberdashery, but by next year maybe I can do it without Beth's help. Here are some videos of famous people wearing bow ties.
