20 June 16

I had to search for great occasions to recognize on 20 June, but the ones I found match nicely for this baseball-and-flag tie. On this date in 1782, the Constitutional Congress accepted Charles Thomson's design for the Great Seal of the new country, featuring a bald eagle and a shield with thirteen stripes. In 1787, Oliver Ellsworth (of Connecticut) proposed "the United States" as the official name for the new government, and that was approved by the Congress. In baseball, in 1950, Joe DiMaggio scored his 2000th career hit (and you can find many more baseball occasions for this and every day of the year at "National Pastime -- Baseball History").
