23 January 25

Today is National Handwriting Day, honoring the birthday of John Hancock (1737-1793). He's remembered for signing his name on the Declaration of Independence in large enough script that the King of England would be able to read it "without spectacles." That story may not be literally true but we know that his handwriting was very clear, and far more legible than mine! I learned cursive writing in second and third grade at Lincoln Elementary School, Bethlehem, PA, with Mrs. Kost and Miss Welch. If you can read cursive texts well, the National Archives would like your help with many documents.
