On this date (23 March) in 1857, Elisha Graves Otis demonstrated the first safe passenger elevator, at a department store in Manhattan. Earlier inventions had resulted in injuries and deaths when suspension ropes broke, but Otis included a safety catch, which was patented a few years later as an "Improved Hoisting Apparatus." I chose my purple-boxes tie to represent the familiar chambers (or cabs) we use to rise high above the ground. Some elevator plans include horizontal as well as vertical motion.
