15 February 18

Today's noteworthy birthdays include Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and Henry Steinway (1797-1871). But I'm catching up on National Handwriting Day, from 23 January. That date is selected to honor the birthday of John Hancock, who famously signed the Declaration of Independence with huge script so that the King of England could read it without glasses. This is a brand new tie featuring cursive handwriting (from "Wild Ties"). I can still write this way when required, though I much prefer printing, and my cursive signature is inscrutable. In elementary school my grades for penmanship were always "Needs Improvement."
