On a completely different topic, I must mention the birthday today of William Seward Burroughs in 1855, who went on to invent the adding machine (in 1885). I happen to have the adding machine from the late 1940s that my father Arthur Kleppinger owned, and which he used for recording church offerings for over thirty years until he got an electronic calculator. The name Barrett on my father's adding machine refers to Glenn J. Barrett, who designed machines for the Burroughs company in the early 20th century before setting up his own business in 1914.
