6 February 17

On this date in golf history: In 1968, former President Dwight Eisenhower hit a hole in one at Seven Lakes Country Club in Palm Springs, CA. In 1971, during the Apollo 14 mission, astronaut Alan Shepard fitted an 8 iron head to the handle of a lunar sample collection device and launched two golf balls. Most sources say he hit three balls, but a careful analysis of the audio transcript of the event, along with Shepard's own recollection, prove that there are "only" two golf balls on the surface of the Moon. (Also please note that it is Waitangi Day in New Zealand. I'll have to celebrate that somehow next year.)
