On this date in 1878, Emma Nutt became the world's first female telephone operator, for the Boston Telephone Dispatch Company. They had hired some boys as operators earlier that year but they proved unreliable and prone to mischief. Emma's salary is reported by Wikipedia as $10 per week for 54 hours on the job. She continued as an operator for at least 33 years. The Peanuts® gang on my tie are very happy with their telephones!
