Today's chemistry tie celebrates the birthday (in 1917) of Robert B. Woodward, sometimes honored as the "preeminent organic chemist of the twentieth century" (from Wikipedia). He was awarded the 1965 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on understanding the mechanisms (molecular pathways) for chemical reactions.
