17 April 11

Two important events in the history of New York City:
  • April 17, 1524: Giovanni da Verrazano reached (that is, "discovered") what is now New York City's harbor. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, opened in 1964, connects Brooklyn to Staten Island.
  • April 17, 1907: More immigrants were processed through Ellis Island than on any other day in its colorful history -- 11,747 people. Immigrant Heritage Week is celebrated April 11-17.
